Yoga vs. Vegetarianism
Whenever I think that this debate is long dead, it suddenly comes up all over again with much more force and vigor and every time both the camps debate the issue with the best possible logic they can have. Ancient scriptures are cited and the very fundamental basic of yoga are sometimes questioned when Yoga Vs vegetarianism debate arises. What I like most about this debate is how non-vegetarians approach this subject and how vegans sometimes try to out logic them with their”yogier than thou” stand.
The debate is again in focus with the recent article in The New York Times, When Chocolate and Chakras Collide, Yogis for the debate are again talking about how “Ahimsa” or non-violence is the first principle of yoga and is non-negotiable as it the very foundation on which the principals of yoga are based. People against the debate say the ahminsa has not been defined clearly and whether it includes all animals, or only people, or should perhaps extend to the plant kingdom. Living in a politically correct world most people follow “don’t ask, don’t tell” attitude about the issue.
Gurupitaka and SYE (simple yoga exercises) stand with vegetarian yogis in this debate though we respectfully agree that your yoga practice cannot be inferior just because of your diet.
