We are closed from Friday 22nd December until the 7th January for the Christmas holidays. Have a good one everyone
So sorry I haven’t updated the website in soooo long. As many of you will know it has been an incredibly busy time for me both at home and work. Those of you that attend my classes have probably noticed how busy we are right now. The yoga studio has been a huge success and I owe that to you guys who come along each week and take part and make every day a worth while working experience for me. I truly appreciate the love and support you have shown me over the last few weeks. It has made a huge difference.
We are so busy I am actually turning new members away for the time being. This is unacceptable to me as I want anyone interested in Yoga to be taking part and there is no better place than with us at the simple yoga group. So with that in mind I am actively looking for a new teacher to take some classes and help me expand the business.
There are few people who have been coming to my classes for so long that they are just as knowledgeable as I am. I have spoken to a couple of them already but I am opening this out to interested parties. You must be experienced obviously and have flexible working hours. The new classes will likely be during week days and on the week ends. I will continue to do the night classes for the time being. So please come and see me if you are interested and we can discuss the role in more detail. Or send me an email here. Pay will be negotiable depending on experience and how much time you can give me. I truly believe we have the opportunity to grow this into a nationwide business and one day have a Simple Yoga class in every part of the country. That is my dream and anyone coming on board now maybe in for the ride on that journey.
Another reason I will need more hands on deck is that my wife is currently expecting! She is due very shortly, we are very excited and nervous. I will be taking some time off work for paternity leave in the next month or so. So I really need to get some people in either as volunteers or as staff to cover the classes while I am off. The last thing I want is to cancel any classes. We are too busy for that to happen and there would be too many disappointed people. No good!
I am also looking to introduce a diet class soon. It will be similar to weight watchers and basically be a weekly class where like minded people can come and motivate each other in their weight loss goals. We will have a weigh in to keep everyone motivated. If you are interested in this then please let me know asap as the class is filling up already and I haven’t even confirmed it’s going ahead yet!
In other news we are expecting a delivery of new mats and other equipment for the studio this week. I think it’s going to be on Thursday so if anyone wants to stop by on the afternoon and help me unpack it all then please feel free. There will be a cup of tea in it for you!
You may remember some months ago I told you I had started matched betting. I told a few people about it and briefly mentioned it on this blog. The last few months have been amazing. I joined a great group called Oddsmonkey (click here) and I have been making close to £1000 a month! Every penny I have made has gone into a savings account I am building up for the new baby. There is quite a lot of money in there now. Seriously guys if you aren’t on this yet you should be, it is bloody amazing. Sport is something we are obviously all passionate about and this is a way to enjoy it even more! I can only give the Oddsmonkey group a full thumbs up but you can read a full review on the link.
Finally I must say a massive congratulations to Mary-Anne who has just given birth to a baby girl. Amazingly she pretty much trained with us all the way to the end. She doesn’t have a name yet so maybe you guys can help her out there.
I can’t promise that I will keep this up to date over the next few weeks but any sudden changes to classes will be posted here so it is worth checking back. I have no intention of cancelling classes but everything is up in the air with the imminent arrival at the moment so I guess you can never say never.
We will be closed from the 16th December until January 3rd for Xmas. Have a great time everyone. Keep practicing at home!
To give me a break and you guys a bit of variety I have brought in a good friend of mine to run this weekends classes. She’s a brilliant coach and will give you a completely different take on Yoga from what I do. She may become a permanent fixture here at simple yoga so please go along and support her first class this Sunday at 10am.
See you there!
So I needed a new darlington accountant! Things have been going great here at the Yoga club so I decided to bring in a professional to get my finances and accounts in order. Google as always was my saviour and I found a great local company who have been so helpful and polite I decided to blog about it!
http://www.accountants-northeast.co.uk/ is where you can find them if you are looking for one in this area as well.
Getting your taxes and finances in order is not something that should be overlooked as it can lead to a big headache down the road. The tax man needs his cut unfortunately but that’s life!
Next weekends classes are not on as I am on holiday. I have mentioned it to everyone who has attended this week but I know there were a few faces missing. Please accept my apologies but I was unable to find anyone to cover the classes. All classes will resume as normal from the Monday.
One of my members told me about this recently and I think it’s amazing. It’s a great way to earn some extra cash in your spare time! Go and read this review to see what I am talking about http://exercisereview.co.uk/2016/04/28/oddsmonkey-review/
I’ve updated the prices and times page, please note the new times.
As of next week I will be doing some advanced classes straight after the beginners class. If you have been attending my classes for 6 months or more and you feel lie a new challenge is needed then these are the classes for you. They are not easy and will test you to your limits but they will take you to the next level.
Here’s a video featuring some of the techniques we will be covering and practicing in class.
My new studio is new to me but unfortunately it’s not so new to the world. The rood panels are shot. As much as I like fixing things myself this is something I cannot do. I contacted a local company to sort it for me. They came out and repaired the panels and resprayed them to protect them against all the rain and weather that they will undoubtedly be exposed to in this country.
I’m absolutely thrilled with the result. The whole roof looks brand new even though it’s very old.
As I mentioned in a previous post http://www.simpleyogaexercises.co.uk/wood-spray-paints-and-ral-aerosols/ my new studio was getting set up. Here it is! Very exciting. I love my little building!
Once my new studio is up and running I will be starting classes for beginners and experienced students. These classes will cost £5 for an hours session and will probably be on Wednesday and Friday nights. If you are in the Durham area and are interested then please contact me using the contact form and let me know.
I will be announcing more classes in the very near future so keep checking back here for updates. I have already had quite a lot of interest so I expect places to fill up fast. I like to keep the classes small so everyone gets the attention they deserve.
1. Mountain Pose
Start standing with your feet together. Press down through all ten toes as you spread them open. Engage your quadriceps to lift your kneecaps and lift up through the inner thighs. Draw your stomach muscles in and up as you lift your chest and press the tops of the shoulders down.
Feel your shoulder blades coming towards each other and open your chest; but keep your palms facing inwards towards the body. Imagine a string drawing the crown of the head up to the ceiling and breathe deeply in to the torso. Hold for 5-8 breaths.
2. Downward Facing Dog
Come on to all fours with your wrists under your shoulders and knees under your hips. Tuck under your toes and lift your hips up off the floor as you draw them up at back towards your heels.
Keep your knees slightly bent if your hamstrings are tight, otherwise try and straighten out your legs while keeping your hips back. Walk your hands forward to give yourself more length if you need to.
Press firmly through your palms and rotate the inner elbows towards each other. Hollow out the abdominals and keep engaging your legs to keep the torso moving back towards the thighs. Hold for 5-8 breaths before dropping back to hands and knees to rest.
From all fours, tuck under your toes and lift your legs up off the mat. Slide your heels back enough until you feel you are one straight line of energy from your head to your feet.
Engage the lower abdominals, draw the shoulders down and away from the ears, pull your ribs together and breathe deeply for 8-10 breaths.
Start standing with your feet one leg’s-length apart. Open and stretch your arms to the sides at shoulder height. Turn your right foot out 90 degrees and your left toes in about 45 degrees.
Engage your quadriceps and abdominals as you hinge to the side over your right leg. Place your right hand down on your ankle, shin or knee (or a block if you have one) and lift your left arm up to the ceiling.
Turn your gaze up to the top hand and hold for 5-8 breaths. Lift up to stand and repeat on the opposite side. Tip: I like to imagine I’m stuck between two narrow walls when I’m in triangle pose.
Start with your feet together and place your right foot on your inner left upper thigh. Press your hands in prayer and find a spot in front of you that you can hold in a steady gaze.
Hold and breathe for 8-10 breaths then switch sides. Make sure you don’t lean in to the standing leg and keep your stomach muscles engaged and shoulders relaxed.
6. Warrior 1
For warrior one, you can take a giant step backwards with your left foot. Then turn your left heel down and angle your left toes forward 70 degrees.
Lift your chest and press your palms up overhead. Step forward and repeat on the opposite leg.
7. Warrior 2
Stand with your feet one leg-length apart. Turn your right foot out 90 degrees and your left foot in 45 degrees. Bend your right knee until it is directly over your right ankle while keeping the torso even between the hips.
Stretch your arms out to your sides and look over your right hand. Hold for 8-10 breaths before straightening the right leg and turning your feet to the other side to repeat on left side.
8. Seated Forward Bend
Start seated with your legs together, feet firmly flexed pointing forwards, and your hands by your hips. Lift your chest and start to bend forward from your waist. Engage your lower stomach muscles and imagine your belly button moving to the top of your thighs.
Once you hit your limit stop and breathe for 8-10 breaths. Make sure your shoulders, head and neck are all released and relaxed.
9. Bridge Pose
Lie down face up and place your feet hips width apart. Press firmly to your feet and lift your bum up off the mat. Lock your hands together and press your balled fists down into the floor as you open up your chest a little more.
Imagine dragging your heels on the mat towards your shoulders to engage your hamstrings. Hold for 8-10 breaths then lower your hips down and repeat two more times.
10. Child’s Pose
Start on all fours then bring your knees and feet together as you sit back to your heels and stretch your arms out forwards. Lower your forehead to the floor, as much as it feels comfortable, and let your entire body relax. Hold for as long as it feels good!
My new yoga studio is currently under construction. I picked up a really old building that needed doing up. Absolutely loads of character but a lot of work and money needed. The cladding on the outside of the building was an absolute mess, the condition of the panels was ok but the paint was all peeling off and it looked god awful.
I’ve always been a bit of a diyer so I bought some special spray paint for wood and got to work. I first had to sand it all down and get all the old paint off. No easy task when you have a whole building to do but if something is worth doing it is worth doing right and well. I’d used spray paints before and usually gone for RAL or Pantone colours. They are an iductry standard and the finish on these paints is unbelievable.
Once the wood was ready to be painted I got to work spraying each panel with my spray paints.
I went with a RAL spray paint aerosol colour, I won’t bore you with the colour code but it’s a nice sunny yellow like the one in my logo at the top of this page.
I really should have taken before and after pictures but all I forgot. Once I got started I got it done within a few days. I’m really pleased with the finish I got from the paints. All the cans I ordered blended perfectly, there were no colour discrepancies. Even better they gave me FREE next day delivery so I could get started on my project straight away. Personally once I get an idea in my head I like to execute it or I get frustrated so the next day delivery suited me down to the ground, it being free was just an added bonus.
Pictures will be posted in my next blog along with an update from inside the studio. I’m waiting for a nice sunny day before I take a photo so it looks at it’s best for the website. Guess you might be waiting a while with this UK “Summer”!
